About this project:
The University of Oklahoma Child Study Center is undergoing an exciting transformation to create a natural learning environment for children aged 3-5. This innovative project serves families from the surrounding community as well as children of UCO staff and students. Funded by the Oklahoma Partnership for School Readiness, Phase 1 focuses on reimagining the existing playground to incorporate natural elements and foster creativity, exploration, and connection with the outdoors.
The updated space features a creativity hut, a multi-functional area designed to inspire imaginative and artistic play. Children will enjoy theater activities, chalking and marker art, magnet-based projects, and a quiet space for reflective play.
Three outdoor musical instruments were added to offer opportunities for sensory engagement and creative expression. A hollow log provides an exciting tunnel play element, encouraging physical exploration and imaginative games. At the main entry, two raised garden beds will eventually form a vine-covered tunnel, creating a welcoming and nature-inspired gateway to the playground.
Future phases of the project will further enhance the play environment. Plans include replacing the existing plastic and metal climbing structure with nature-integrated play equipment, building a shaded deck around a mature tree, and upgrading the concrete bike path to enrich the outdoor experience. These additions will create a cohesive and engaging space that grows with the needs of the children.
Program director LaDonna Atkins has included collaboration with architecture students from the University of Oklahoma to help bring this vision to life. Their fresh perspectives and creative designs promise to shape a dynamic environment that nurtures learning and development through play. This new natural learning environment represents a commitment to innovative education and community engagement, providing children with a space to thrive.
